Mexico City is one of the largest metropolis in the world. Huge, full of contrasts; life is going on between modernity and very old traditions.

a bit of history

Before Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World, the Valley of Mexico was already a bustling center of life and commerce. Known for being the longest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere (it was founded in 1325), Mexico City now ranks as the largest city in the world. Once called Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital city was built on a one-square mile island in an enormous shallow lake. By the early 1500's it was the capital of a military empire that stretched from Texas to Honduras. The Spanish crown, led by Hernan Cortes, conquered the Aztec Empire in 1521. It was not until the early 1800s that Mexico began its long, hard quest for independence - which it won in 1821.

Mexico City

Mexico City, love it or hate it, there is nearly nothing in between good and bad.
It's a nice looking coulorful megalopolis, exhilarating and overpowering. One moment the city is all music, glamour and excitement; the next it's drabness, poverty, suffocating crowds and pollution. It contradicts itself at every turn with its colonial palaces, friendly people, deafening traffic and peaceful green parks.
Mexico City is a strong magnet for Mexicans and visitors like. With nearly a quarter of the country's population, it is the head of the country economically, politically and culturally.

And for all tastes and wallet sizes you can find a cheeseburger, tacos and other exotic meals. You will be succesful to find it somewhere in the cosmopolitan maze. As for entertainment, you can disco one night, and mariachi, take a movie, or enjoy a symphony orchestra at work. This city has a fast, and unpredictable, heartbeat - you won't be bored for a minute.
